Mayor Ivy’s clean image earned her victory for third time in a row : speakers

Dhaka January 22 2022 :

The recent election of Narayanganj City Corporation was very important for Bangladesh and it served as an example in various aspects of Bangladesh’s political situation.

The election proved once again that the people were interested in electing the right people and they were interested in voting.

Speakers pointed out that the recent election was fair and Dr. Selina Hayat Ivy came to power as Mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation with people’s mandate.

They highlighted that electronic voting machine (EVM) caused ambiguity among voters and many failed to cast vote due to mismatch of finger prints, lack of knowledge and irritation.

They also said women voters in the poll had contributed more than the men’s to select Mayor Ivy as mayor third time in a row.

Mayor Ivy’s clean image, development works and devotion earned her victory despite different political and local challenges.

Such constructive discussions to further strengthen the overall electoral process of Bangladesh, the recent poll created an example.

On these aspects, Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) on Saturday organized a virtual dialogue titled ‘Recent Narayanganj City Corporation Poll: People’s Representative Election Process and Experiences’

 

Minister of Planning M. A. Mannan was the chief guest while Narayanganj City Corporation’s newly elected mayor Selina Hayat was the special guest at the dialogue.

Arma Dutta, MP and Member, Standing Committee on Ministry of Social Welfare, Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad; Barrister Shamim Haider Patwari, MP, Member, Standing Committee on Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad and Barrister Rumin Farhana, MP and Member, Standing Committee on Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad were present as Guest of Honor in the dialogue.

M Sakhawat Hossain, former Election Commissioner, and SIPG Senior Research Fellow (NSU) and Dr. Tofail Ahmed, former Vice Chancellor, University of Britannia and Specialist in Local Government and Governance took part as honorable discussant.

Dr. Badiul Alam Majumder, Country Director and Global Vice President, The Hunger Project-Bangladesh and Secretary Citizen for Good Governance (Sujan) presented the keynote paper in the dialouge.

Professor Rehman Sobhan, Chairman, CPD preside over the dialogue.

Dr. Fahmida Khatun, Executive Director, CPD delivered inaugural remarks.

The dialogue were attended by prominent people from civil society including public representatives, academics, development workers, NGO representatives, private sector entrepreneurs, social workers and media.
