PM implementing delta plan to face natural disasters: speakers

Speakers at a workshop here have said Prime
Minister Sheikh Hasina has been implementing Delta Plan-2100 to protect the
country from natural calamities.

   They came up with the observation while addressing a workshop-cum-training
on Delta Plan-2100 at the BMDA conference hall in Rajshahi yesterday.

  The General Economic Division (GED) of Bangladesh Planning Commission
hosted the workshop under its ‘Support to the Implementation of the
Bangladesh Delta Plan 2100′ project.

   State Minister for Planning Dr Shamsul Alam and GED Member Dr Kaosar Ahmed
joined virtually as chief and special guests respectively.

  Chairman of Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) Begum Akhter
Jahan also attended the function.

  Officials of concerned departments, including BMDA, Department of
Agricultural Extension, Department of Fisheries, Department of Livestock,
Department of Environment, Department of Public Health Engineering and
Bangladesh Water Development Board, from Rajshahi, Naogaon, Natore,
Chapainawabganj, Pabna and Sirajganj, were present at the workshop.

  Speakers said the premier also created scopes of women leadership in
different sectors from Union Parishad to National Parliament for their
development and empowerment.

  In the day-long workshop, aims, objectives, implementation strategy and
approach of the plan were discussed elaborately to create awareness among all
the implementing agencies.

  The discussants viewed that adoption of time-befitting projects along with
its successful implementation has become crucial to mitigate the existing
water scarcity in the region including its vast Barind tract.

  Emphasis should be given on enriching the surface water resources through
re-excavating the derelict ponds, canals, wetlands and other water bodies to
bring farming fields under surface water-based irrigation instead of the
groundwater, they said.

  Various issues like overall water resource management in Barind, Chalan
Beel and their adjacent areas were discussed in the workshop to make the
delta plan sustainable and time-befitting.
